The Great Australian Joke: Is your computer Male or Female?

Editorial: July 7th 2005

G'Day Blokes and Sheilas!

Here I am again! It seems for now at least NetBloke is going to come out about once a month. I am busy working on upgrading the site, and from what I am learning I have a lot of information I think that will help all of you with your own Web sites.

This issue is going to make you more familiar with CMS solutions. These are the transparent backend systems that can be used to run and manage your web site.

In other news I can report that Thunderbird, the free email client, is working a charm handling my multiple email addresses. At a subscribers request I checked out Sunbird, however as it is an early beta I really was not impressed with it. Sure it has a lot of potential but it is not ready for the general public.

Have a great day!

Nathan Allan

Definition: CMS

CMS is the acronym for Content Management System. A Content Management System is a collection of scripts and programs that you can use to create and manage your web site.

In the past CMS has been an expensive custom programming solution, however now there are many free and low cost systems available for anyone to use.

Software Review: Mambo

Mambo is a CMS that has taken on a life of its own. It seems to have one of the largest communities of developers and users, which is vital for ongoing support and development.

The install is quick and relatively simple. Some web hosts will even have the scripts ready to roll out to your hosting account.

For the basic web site you can easily get away with just the Mambo server core, but there are a myriad of plug-ins, both free and costly, that can be added to tailor your system to perform exactly how you want it to.

After researching and trying a couple of CMS systems, I believe it will be Mambo that I choose to port over my NetBloke site to. This should allow me to add some of the features and content I want to have quickly and easily.

Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.

Web Site Review: OpenSourceCMS.com

"Try before you...Install" is the catchphrase for this useful site. I cannot think of a better way to find out and decide for yourself which CMS is going to work best for your needs.

This is where I have tried many CMS systems. As I mentioned for my needs Mambo looks the best. For my local neighborhood association LucidCMS was the best choice. It is simple and small. You can see it in use in a real world situation at the Eastside Neighborhood Association.

Maybe the best thing about a good CMS is that once set up (and sometimes before) it allows people with no knowledge of how a web page works to build and manage an entire site. At worst you could get a techie friend to install a CMS for you and then hand over the keys so you can run the site yourself.

The Great Australian Joke: Is your computer Male or Female?

Recently, a group of scientists (all male) announced that computers should be referred to as being female. Their reasons for drawing this conclusion are as follows:

  1. No one but the creator understands their internal logic.
  2. The native language they use to communicate with other computers is incomprehensible to everyone else.
  3. The message "Bad command or file name" is about as informative as "If you don't know why I'm mad at you, then I'm certainly not going to tell you".
  4. Even your smallest mistakes are stored in long-term memory for later retrieval.
  5. As soon as you make a commitment to one, you find yourself spending half your paycheck on accessories for it.
However, another group of computer scientists (all female) think that computers should be referred to as if they were male. Their reasons are as follows:
  1. They have a lot of data, but are still clueless.
  2. They supposed to help you solve problems, but half the time they are the problem.
  3. As soon as you commit to one, you realize that if you had waited a little longer you could have obtained a better model.
  4. In order to get their attention, you have to turn them on.
  5. Big power surges knock them out for the rest of the night.
So I shall leave it to you to decide!
