G'day!

Before I kick off on this issues topic of Maps and Navigation, how many of you deleted SULFNBK.EXE? It sure was a good urban myth that got lots of misinformed users to delete this utility that actually allows you to restore long file names! Don't worry if you don't know what that means or what it does, just remember that it cannot and will not hurt your computer.

Really it was just a bunch of well meaning blokes and sheilas out there in computer land that thought they would help their colleagues and friends by spreading the word of this supposed 'virus' that was going to explode earlier this month. I have told you all before if you ever get an email that mentions to be wary of a virus, go and check out its validity at vmyths.com where Rob Rosenberger will give you the low down on the real and the hoax viruses.

Now back to the topic of this issue! Maps and navigation can be bought, sold and used all over the Web. If you need to get somewhere or find somewhere the Web is the quickest way to do it! The tools made available by various Web sites are great and oh so useful. I don't think there would be one person out there that couldn't put some of these tips and Web sites to good use!

Until next week seeya later!

Internet Tip

One thing that I have found invaluable in my use of the Web is mapping sites. By this I mean road maps. With some of the choices offered to us now you can map everything from a road trip (with rest stops and meal breaks at your favorite restaurants) to the location of a store in some obscure suburban place.

One of the great things about these sites is that they do not go out of date like your printed maps and directories.

Another great feature is driving directions as offered on the American MapQuest.com Web site.

Australians should try out whereis.com, which is also linked into the local Whitepages.

I am sure this tip is a useful one that could potentially save you the need to purchase maps on your next big trip!

Definition: Wake up, Australia!

Of course the obvious slang phrase I could of used for this edition was something to do with a map of a particular state of Australia, but as fellow Aussies may agree this may not be the best subject matter for any kiddies reading. Therefore this issues definition is:

Wake up, Australia!

Now if you are off daydreaming and not really reading this properly, and I was to walk up to you, I would yell 'Wake up, Australia!' at you. In other words it is what is said to someone who is not listening properly or off with the fairies daydreaming.

Web Site Review: Printsellers

If you love old world maps or specific regional maps from centuries ago you will love this Web site. I was lucky enough to get to go to one of Lahaina Printsellers stores on Maui while I was honeymooning. While there I purchased a cartographers map of the Hawaiian Islands (or Sandwich Islands as they were once known) and a surveyors map of Kauai (my personal favorite island). The store was impressive with maps from just about everywhere in the world, along with Hawaiian prints and the like.

I purchased mine on canvas and I am currently having them framed locally. Eventually they will have pride of place on my study wall.

Back to the printsellers.com Web site. Now I imagined a decent site with a small inventory that could be purchased online, but when I got home and checked it out I was really impressed! This site is wonderful, if you ever want a map of anywhere (perhaps your state of birth or some far of holiday dream destination) you will be sure to find it here. And if you don't I am sure you will find that the friendly staff will do everything within their power to find an appropriate map for you. Candice Riddle was extremely helpful and found us the obscure map of Kauai.

So check out this Web site! It is well worth poking around for a while.

Tech Riddle

I have a question from a reader that I could not answer myself. I have actually had this problem myself.

"Hey NetBloke! I have Internet Explorer and the flash installer on Macromedia's web site doesn't work. It says some about no valid security certificate and asks me if I want to trust the download. Although I click ok it doesn't do anything. Please help as I would love to have flash working!"

Answer:

So can anyone help with an answer to this one? Has anyone else had the same problem?

If you have a question of your own, contact me.

The Great Australian Joke

Keeping with the map theme I dug up this joke from The Philadelphia Print Shop.

A lawyer, a cartographer, and a doctor were having a theological debate. Each was arguing that God was a member of his profession.

"Remember," said the doctor, "that the first thing God did was to bring Adam and Eve into the world; He must be a doctor -- indeed, an obstetrician."

"Nonsense," said the cartographer. "BEFORE God created Adam and Eve, He separated the seas from the land and brought order out of chaos; He must be a cartographer."

"Yes," said the lawyer quietly, "but who do you think created the chaos?"
