This year has been the been filled with turmoil for me. There have been many ups and downs, stresses and arguments, joys and good memories.
I have achieved things that I am very proud of, and I have done things that I regret and am ashamed of. However all the things that I have done and have happened to me have helped me realize where and who I want to be.
My daughter Hayden has been the one constant joy. Yeah she has been a disobedient, whiny three year old, but so have I sometimes. At least she is three. She is also growing up fast. Her intelligence is amazing to witness. Her thoughts shared are entertaining and insightful. She shows love I have never come in contact with before, a love that is untarnished and not judge-mental. i hope and pray I can help her fulfill her dreams and help her become whatever person she so so desires to be. To nurture and love her and provide her with a future that allows her to reach her full potential, whether that be a ballerina or a construction worker. I hope one day she reads this and realizes that she really helped me get through this year.
My wife, Karissa, has been equally vital to my being. I can only hope she sees through the smoke and realizes what a horrible year this has been for me. The new year brings with it new hope, a new perspective on life, and change in priorities for me. She is the person I am meant to be with, the one I will love for eternity. I just want her to know that I believe our relationship will be stronger for all the hurt and pain we have suffered, and on the other side will be the envy of other couples.
My friends have been great. I may not have a lot but the ones I do have are trusted and true. I realized just how good a friend an old one was earlier this year, and am happy to have made another with the same morales and kindness more recently.
Finally there is family. I have realized how much they mean to me, both extended, immediate, and in-laws. They are a vital cog in any persons life.
So to sum up I think it is a new year that I needed. A new page. A new start. A time to reflect. I wish everyone who reads this a safe and happy year. Just take some time out to appreciate the ones you love for me!
Well yesterday we made the trip over to the Omaha Zoo, which is a good 2 hour drive from Des Moines. Let me start by saying it is a wonderful zoo and far exceeded my expectations.
They have a number of large feature displays that are done extremely well. There is the Desert Dome, the Rainforest, the big cats display, bear display, giraffes, gorillas, aquarium, and giant aviary (albeit currently minus the majority of birds thanks to the cold). They are working on a number of displays at the moment and I am sure next summer the zoo will be even more of an event.
Of course my daughter Hayden loved it all. She was particularly taken by the gorillas as was I.
In summer they also have a small train, tram and carousel running. I imagine the zoo would have a lot more visitors in the warmer weather.
Anyway if you live within a stones throw or a relatively short drive you should go check it out, as it was definitely worth the $8.50. They also have an IMAX which could add another element into the days experience.
I will be going back with Karissa and Hayden this summer some time. Probably spend the night there as well.
I took my family out shopping today. The first big experience for my parents in the American retail landscape. Obviously everybody was ready for more shopping after Christmas as stores and streets were packed. Shopping must be one of the most tiring activities out!
Anyway I picked up some general cheap bargains, as did my parents! They are getting super winterized in case it gets colder here.
Tomorrow we are off to the Omaha Zoo. It is suppose to be beautiful weather for it too ( well at least for this time of the year).
I hope everyone reading this has had, or is having a fantastic Christmas. If you are all as blessed as I am to have such a wonderful family you are lucky.
It has been a joy to spend the day with them and appreciate just being!
If you want details ont he day read Karissa's Blog!
Well my parents have invaded the USA. You Americans do not know what your in for. Seriously it is only a month and I am sure you will all survive.
I made my wife Karissa a blog for Christmas. I hope she likes it. Here it is.
I had a realization today while reading various self help books at Barnes and Noble.
Everyone really does need to take time out for themselves every now and then. Actually I would say every couple of weeks at least.
We are all trying so hard to achieve various things in our lives, that we sometimes forget to look after ourselves.
Yeah I have hobbies, friends and other outlets besides my immediate family, but I never really do anything just for me. You know, guilty pleasures like a massage, sleeping in just because I want to and not because I'm tired, driving off and exploring the countryside by myself, riding my bike to see where the path goes. The list goes on.
No I do not think this is a selfish idea. I think it will enable me to have a more balanced lifestyle that will allow my loved ones to appreciate me more. I also have to make a point of letting them have this same sort of time as well. Not that I am stopping them from now but if they want to, let them.
Hey my Mum actually posted to my blog! She commented on the last post! Not only does this mean she actaully reads it, she has actually made an effort to become more technically literate.
Yeah for most of us younger people this whole computer thing is nothing. We grew up with them though. Older generations did not. It is like getting a piece of furniture from IKEA and trying to work out what those Swedes really mean!
Anyway thanks for posting Mum! (That is mom for you american readers, as in mother). :-)
I am just thinking that life is too fast right now. I just want to be able to sit back and relax. I want enjoy the holidays with my family.
I would love to be able to turn off work for a week but it simply is not that easy.
Anyway in this time of last minute shopping and the like try to relax a little and realize that everyone probably already has everything they need. It is just wants that are being fulfilled.
Have a nice day!
Soem feedback from a Sausage Sizzler reader, has led me to this Australian based wireless site.
If you are going downunder or live there already check it out.
I saw this wonderful thought provoking documentary tonight with Karissa.
If only the masses watched things like this the USA may be a safer place.
I don't think I will bother watching American TV news anymore. The BBC World News for me from now on.
Perhaps doing that will lower my stress levels?
Please please please, if you have not seen this movie go see it.
So last weekend we went over to Omaha for one night. Just to have a bit of a look and see what was so exciting there.
Well we loved teh Old Market area. The leaders of Des Moines could take a leaf out of Omaha's book. You can see how wonderful an old downtown area can be if you leave historic buildings rather than pull them down. The area has feeling and a soul.
To go to the flip side of retailing we touched base at Nebraska Furniture Mart. This place would take the whole weekend to look at!
Next trip to Omaha we are going to try out their zoo.
Could it be true? Is this, the third SMC router, actually working?
Thanks to Brian for proving the second one was stuffed.
I am not holding my breathe but lets all hope I have added to my potential for work by adding this wireless router to my set-up here!
Just watched this DVD. I won't spoil it (for those who haven't seen it) but it really does make you realise that we can all make the world a slightly better place to be.
Just try and do something nice for one person today.
I don't drink caffeine much at all anymore.
Instead of my beloved Coca Cola, I drink Sam's Caffeine Free Diet Cola. It really doesn't taste too bad!
Well anyway I was at Cup O Kryptonite with Brian and Orion, and had a Latte. A few hours later and I still am wide awake.
Nice coffee and great comics. If your ever in Des Moines check them out!
As seen in the inside of Meat Loaf's Bat out of Hell II- Back into Hell - CD Jacket:
May Peace Prevail On Earth
I know this means I am absolutely without good taste, but currently I am listening to my old Belinda Carlise CDs. The upside is that it is motivating me to get a lot of work done in a short period of time.
For those of you who aren't Australian, HECS is the debt you incur when you go to university and defer your fees. It is sort of like an American Student Loan.
Once you earn a decent salary the Australian Tax Office (ATO) make you pay a extra amount of tax to start paying off your HECS debt.
Well I was all excited about a big tax return this year but the ATO decided to wipe out the fine $2976 (and my tax return).
However the right side of this story is that I no longer have a HECS debt! My university education is paid off for good!
I updated my Webcam page so that you can see the last 8 or so images.
This means that when I have it going live for a while all will look similar but otherwise there might be some variety in there.
Using a router and wireless access point (WAP) as a simple as wimple WAP and hub may be a bit of overkill, but I think I am going to live in the hope that SMC come out with a firmware upgrade that will help me out with the DHCP setup.
I have put out a small call for help on the BroadbandReports.com forum, some of the experts there may have some ideas as well. As this is a really new product they may simply take a little while to make it perfect.
